NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
CRIME PREVENTION AWARENESS
Published: Wednesday, July 28, 2010

The 27th Annual National Night Out (NNO), a unique crime drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 3, 2010.

Involved since 1984, Akron last year had 13 sites with more than 3,000 residents attending the different activities. This year fourteen sites will be participating. Included is a new site in E. Market Street Buchtel Avenue area of Akron. (The full list is attached as a PDF)

National Night Out is designed to:

* Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;

* Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;

* Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and

* Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back

Events start as early as 5:00 PM and run as late as 9:00 PM. Most sites will feature music, games and free food. All will provide information on safety, health and other issues of concern. City of Akron anti-crime signs will be available at all sites as well as Block Watch sign-up and information. This year’s theme is: “Reclaiming Our Neighborhoods”

Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 15,000 communities and all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, more than 36 million people participated in NNO 2009.
