Marco S. Sommerville, a life-long resident of Akron, is president and CEO of Sommerville Funeral Services. He attended Akron Public Schools, and is a graduate of John R. Buchtel High School. Sommerville attended Kent State University and received a degree in 1974 from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. In 1978, he started his own funeral business in Akron and five years later, moved it to its current location on Diagonal Road in west Akron.

In 1987, Mr. Sommerville was appointed Akron’s Ward 3 Councilman. He has since been elected to eight terms, and his experience was a key factor, in 1999, when his peers voted him city council president.

Councilman Sommerville has always been passionate about his community. He is a past president of the Akron Branch NAACP, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, and West Side Neighbors; and, has also served on the Akron Urban League and Akron Health Department boards. He continues to serve as a member of the Downtown Akron Partnership, Akron/Summit Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the Emergency Medical Services boards.

Councilman Sommerville and his wife Debbie are the proud parents of three children.
