Lunzy Armstrong was appointed Deputy Service Director for the City of Akron in April of 1989. Mr. Armstrong was responsible for oversight on operations of the City of Akron’s Bureau of Public Works, the motor equipment division, facilities maintenance, off-street parking and traffic engineering.

Lunzy, a life-long member of the Akron community, is a graduate of South High School and The University of Akron.

Mr. Armstrong has been involved in athletics for most of his life. He taught marshal arts at the YMCA and holds a black belt in the sport. He was a driving force for athletics in the Lane Field area of South Akron. In 1964 he coached football in an independent youth league. Shortly afterwards, he became the first black coach and director of the South Rangers football program which originated in the Firestone Park area. He moved the team to its present site at Lane Field in 1966 and during his ten year tenure, the team won nine championships. In 1971 he helped establish the first pee wee football program there and early on was community youth director for the Lane Improvement Association. In 2003, he was instrumental in the design and construction of the new Lane Field Sports Complex.

Mr. Armstrong, a member of the 1992-93 Class of Leadership Akron, taught business management at Dret Vocational School and was facility manager for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company.

Lunzy Armstrong retired in 2006.
