Cazzell M. Smith, Sr. was elected as District 5 Representative of Summit County Council in January of 1991; representing residents in the western section of the county, including parts of the City of Akron, Fairlawn, and Copley Township.

Mr. Smith received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education from The University of Akron, and a Master of Science in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve School of Applied Social Science.

Mr. Smith began his career as a community organizer at East Akron Community House in 1972. By 1977, he was director of Neighborhood Organization and Development, in conjunction with the Council of Block Club Presidents. He served as Executive Director of the East Akron Community House 1979 to 2011.

Mr. Smith is a former president of the Akron Branch NAACP and is now its Education Chairperson. He is co-founder of the African American Leadership Committee and serves on many community organization’s boards and committees.

Cazzell Smith relinquished his seat on Summit County Council in 2011 to become assistant director of Administrative Services for the Summit County Executive’s Office.
