February is Black History Month and a time for all Americans to recognize the contributions people of color have made to make our country great.

The City of Akron is proud to present profiles of current and former African-Americans who have served the citizens of Akron in both elected and appointed positions. Included in these profiles are: African-Americans who have been elected to Akron City Council, Akron Municipal Court, Akron Board of Education, Summit County Council, Summit County Common Pleas Court and to the State House, serving as representatives of Akron’s predominate black community.

Many of the profiles are of those who have served in my cabinet or in cabinets of previous mayors. These individuals deserve recognition as well, for they too serve the people of Akron and are excellent role models for the entire community. We've also added a Community Page to the website featuring outstanding individuals, who in their lifetimes, made contributions to Akron and its people.

This year, we also invite you to come down to city hall to see our on-site Black History display. We feature three different themed areas. In our lobby and first floor stairwell you will see local history and accomplishments, along with a series of posters depicting Inspiring Moments in African-American History. In the hallway leading to the Skywalk, you will find posters entitled, 10 Days in Black History That Changed Our Nation. Finally, on the third floor, just outside City Council Chambers, are 10 posters, Connecting the Past with the Present, which show the accomplishments of black historical figures of the past connecting to those who are making a great impression on today’s generation.
