WATER PLANT MECHANIC
SALARY RANGE:$36,212.80 - $43,305.60

CANDIDATES MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS AT THE TIME OF EXAMINATION AND AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT.
DEFINITION - This is responsible skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work.
An employee in this class is responsible for all maintenance and repair of treatment plant equipment in an assigned section of the water treatment plant.
Works under the general direction of the Water Plant Maintenance Supervisor with considerable independence in carrying out responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of three years of paid experience in the maintenance and repair of water treatment plant equipment, or any equivalent combination of paid experience and training. The equivalency statement means that you may substitute up to 50% of education for paid experience or 50% of paid experience for education.
Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, practices, and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of complex water treatment machinery and equipment. Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of maintenance and repair work.
Ability to apply acquired knowledge and skills to the repair of a variety of equipment and machines. Ability to read schematic drawings. Ability to work under conditions of stress and hazard. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other workers. Ability to supervise. List of essential job functions available upon request.
COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION PROCESS - The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%. RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron continuously for at least one year immediately prior to the date of examination and who remain resident citizens of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have a 5% bonus added to their passing grade.

NOTE - The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.

SAFETY COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN II

CANDIDATES MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS AT THE TIME OF EXAMINATION AND AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT.
DEFINITION - This is public safety communications dispatching work in the Police, Fire and EMS communications center.
An employee in this class operates multi-channel radio, public address and computer terminal equipment in order to provide prompt and efficient assignment and coordination of Fire, EMS and Police field personnel in response to both emergency and non-emergency requests for service. When not working as a dispatcher, takes calls for service and operates LEADS/NCIC terminal.
Works both independently and as a team member on assigned shift, under general supervision, in a confined area and with limited breaks. Maintains alertness, sensitivity and good judgment during periods of prolonged activity in an emergency atmosphere.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - A minimum of one year of paid experience above the trainee level in Police, Fire and EMS communications work, or a minimum of one year of sworn experience in Police or Fire operations. Currently certified for Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and for LEADS/NCIC terminal operation and usage, or must obtain certifications during probationary period.
Considerable knowledge of the rules, practices, procedures and terminology related to the operation of computer terminal, telephone, public address, multiple-channel radio, light block and video equipment used in the safety communications center.
Considerable knowledge of the geographic layout and boundaries of the City of Akron including location of streets, major intersections, subdivisions, important buildings and major landmarks. Considerable knowledge of the functions, rules, regulations, laws and practices relative to safety communications work. Knowledge of the functions and services of various City departments and local agencies serving the community.
Skill in carrying out all communications and dispatching activity in relation to police, fire and EMS operations. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other persons. List of essential job functions available upon request.
COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION PROCESS - The selection process will consist of a typing test and a competitive examination with credit for experience. Candidates must achieve at least 25 correct words per minute on the typing test to advance in the selection process. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 90%, Experience 10%. RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron continuously for at least one year immediately prior to the date of examination, and who remain resident citizens of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process, will have a 5% bonus added to their passing grade.

CANDIDATES MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS AT THE TIME OF EXAMINATION AND AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT.
DEFINITION - This is routine work in a variety of environments ranging from manual labor to semi-skilled work.
An employee in one of the above classes could perform manual laboring tasks and may require skill in the use of small hand or power tools or operation of the less complex types of power equipment.
Works as a member of a crew under close supervision or independently under general supervision. Work may require heavy physical exertion and may be performed under adverse weather conditions outdoors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Ability to read and write. A minimum of six months of paid experience in general labor work. IMMEDIATE VACANCIES REQUIRE POSSESSION OF A VALID STATE OF OHIO COMMERCIAL DRIVER’S LICENSE (CDL) CLASS B WITHOUT AIR BRAKE RESTRICTION AND A MINIMUM OF ONE YEAR OF PAID EXPERIENCE IN GENERAL LABORING OPERATIONS.
Basic knowledge of hand tools and the standard practices of labor operations.
Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods, often under adverse weather conditions. List of essential job functions available upon request.
COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION PROCESS - Candidates will be ranked in a standard manner based on information, records and other data related to the candidate’s ability to perform the duties of the position sought. DRIVER’S LICENSE: Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of certification or at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration. RESIDENCY - Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron continuously for at least one year immediately prior to the date of examination and who remain resident citizens of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have a 10% bonus added to their passing grade.
