AIDS/HIV Information

HIV and AIDS is a significant public health concern for the Akron Health Department. This disease syndrome affects/effects thousands of people in Akron and Summit County. In order to most effectively deal with all the aspects of this disease, we collaborate with many other agencies and community-based organizations. Listed below are brief descriptions of our partner organizations, which should help you to connect with the education, testing, and other services available for HIV/AIDS in our community. HIV Testing

The Akron Health Department’s Adult Clinic offers free HIV testing during clinic hours, Monday through Friday from 8am- 4:30pm. Appointments are strongly suggested. Call 330-375-2363 to make an appointment or for additional information.

Also, our community has a range of agencies which offer HIV testing in office and community settings. Among the agencies which the Akron Health Department funds to provide HIV testing, and their target populations, are the following:

HIV Prevention Education

Various agencies and community-based organizations (CBOs) receive funding to provide HIV prevention education to populations who are at increased risk for HIV infection. These agencies and CBOs can provide information as well as programming upon request.

HIV/AIDS Services

  • Violet’s Cupboard- this AIDS service organization offers case management and a wide variety of support services, including Ryan White services, which are available for persons both infected and affected by HIV/AIDS; phone- 330-375-2159; e-mail at janarisa@aol.com.

HIV/AIDS Case Reporting

According to Ohio law, an obligation exists for certain entities to report cases of HIV and AIDS. Newly recognized cases of HIV and AIDS must be reported by their attending physician, by the laboratory performing a confirmed HIV test, and, if the patient is hospitalized, by the hospital to the local health department. In Summit County, all HIV and AIDS case reporting should be directed to the Centralized Communicable Disease Registry, located at the Akron Health Department. All HIV and AIDS case reports must be mailed (these reports cannot be faxed to the health department) to the following address:
