Mayor Don Plusquellic is asking Akron residents to become a part of
the solution and help solve crimes in our community.
The mayor calls for more involvement, saying, "I would
like our citizens to consider joining a block watch group or participate in neighborhood
safety in some other way. When someone has witnessed a crime, he or she needs to do the
right thing and call and report it. Too often people witness a crime, but refuse to
disclose what they know."
The City of Akron has available to block watch groups and
others who may want to participate in making their neighborhood safer, an anti-crime yard
sign pledging that you will call police if you witness a crime on your block.
Akron residents who would like to participate can pick up a
free sign with the slogan: Crime, Report it, Dont Support it!, at the Akron
Police Department's community relations office at 217 S. High Street, room 402. Over the
past 7 years, residents have displayed more than 6,000 of these or other anti-crime signs.
To receive your free sign, you must be an Akron resident
and show proof of residency. Only one sign will be given per household, and we encourage
citizens to keep the signs up year round.
For information on where to get your free anti-crime yard
sign, call the Community Relations Unit of the Akron Police Department at (330) 375-2390
or Billy Soule, Assistant to the Mayor for Community Relations at (330) 375-2345.
